About Us

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails.

Explore.  Dream.  Discover.”

Gianmarco and Katie

Katie did not expect a week long journey through the remote corners of Death Valley in a dusty Jeep when Gianmarco asked her out for the first time. However, that journey sparked something in both of them that grew bigger than they both ever expected.
After their exploration of abandoned mines, ghost towns and otherwise forgotten places, they decided that they could not keep the fun to themselves and that they must share this with their friends. The following weekend they recruited their first group to embark with them to Death Valley, retracing their favorite spots they had found just the week before. Weekend after weekend, year after year, the group grew and the adventures became more widespread with trips all throughout California, the greater southwest and even into Mexico. Although the love for travel started it all, Gianmarco and Katie discovered a whole new dimension to it: a true passion for sharing with others the beauty of traveling differently - leaving the known road for the dusty trail.

As interest in traveling to remote and lesser known areas grew, Gianmarco and Katie became the points of reference for those who yearned to set out on such journeys. Imparting the wisdom they had gained from their travels, they taught others how to prepare for such adventures, including recommendations for vehicle equipment, driving expectations, how to efficiently meal plan (without compromising food quality) and routing and GPS software usage.

In between a thousand mile road trip to Baja California and a traverse through the deserts of Southern Utah, Katie and Gianmarco began to toy with the idea of sharing their adventures, tips and recommendations on a grander scale with a website. They also decided they wanted to go on a bigger adventure, one involving traveling to the southern most point of the Western Hemisphere… on a Ural sidecar motorcycle.  Thus Adventure Expeditions was born, with the desire to inspire people to step out of their comfort zone and explore places not found in the typical guidebook. The opportunities around the globe are endless. Wether embarking on a weekend trek or a month long expedition, one can discover and explore beauty off the beaten path.

Come and join them as they discover hidden travel gems around the world starting with their trip from California to Argentina.

Gianmarco on his bike.

Growing up in the quiet suburbs surrounding Los Angeles, Katie found herself playing sports rather than playing with dolls. Starting with roller hockey with her younger brother, she went on to play  flag football for the city league and volleyball for her high school team. As an adult, Katie's recreational interest have progressed into mountain biking through the deserts in Moab, scuba diving in the Sea of Cortez and running up Squaw Valley during a Tough Mudder competition.

Academically, much of Katie's adult life has been spent studying physics. With an unnatural love for mathematics, Katie spent countless hours with her physics books and her TI-83 calculator. After graduating college she ventured out of the country for the first time to trek the jungles of Costa Rica, which sparked Katie's interests in travel and changed her view of life. It was there that she realized the benefits of being immersed in a different culture and gaining perspective from living among different people and cultures.

Since then, she has dived in the crystal clear waters of the coast of Belize, explored ancient Mayan caves in Guatemala, and ridden on the neck of an elephant through the forests in northern Thailand.

Now, nearly a decade after her first passport stamp, with her masters in physics completed and 5 years of passing on her love for physics to her high school students, Katie is ready for the next stage of her life. She is ready for the challenge of learning new languages, pushing the levels of comfort and sanity on a 6-month ride in a sidecar through the roads of Central and South America.

Gianmarco and his bike.Gianmarco:

Born and raised in northern Italy, Gianmarco has craved nature adventures from a very young age. Growing up building tree houses and traveling the world with his family, he finally realized, at the age of 14, his true love for just about everything with an engine. This love took him to places where his dreams became true: enduros and trials up the Alps, driving a Land Rover across Europe, an adventure bike ride across Argentina, and driving a Jeep across the US. By the time he was 30 Gianmarco had traveled to five continents, biked four of them, driven across two, lived in six different countries and visited more than fourty.

In his spare time he earned a BS in Chemical Engineering and a MS in Engineering Management in the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley. He has enjoyed working in the formal corporate world as well as the in the casual, garage-style startup, and his passion for travel has brought him to work on projects in the US, Italy, and China.

But it wasn't until he met Katie that his passion for sharing adventure found its perfect partner in crime, and dreams about long adventure journeys across the globe became a reality.
